CHAPTER 17

Ella backed away from the breath searing her face. The glowing red eyes focused on her before turning to face the growling wolf.

Thorn shifted into his emerald green dragon. His lips curled, exposing his serrated teeth, before raising his tail in the air and extending the deadly scythe. It curved out from the end of his tail. A reapers blade, threatening to send his opponent to the next life.

Riaz answered with his own scythe. Roaring his frustration and anger before advancing on his childhood friend.

Draco stepped in front of Ella. "Stay behind me. You're immune to our fire but, those blades can kill you. This is the death match."

"What?" What said.

"Riaz impaled me with his scythe, but he didn't issue a challenge. It's considered cowardly to creep up on a Dragon. Thorn is making sure Riaz understands that only one Dragon is leaving this mountain match alive."

The dragons growled and moved away. Using the powerful wings to propel themselves up, before delivering a downward blow with their tail. Within seconds both dragons were bleeding, the scythe's missing vital arteries, but delivering painful punctures in the thick dragon hide.

Thorn's coloring blended with foliage behind him. He seemed like part of the forest as he moved over it, ducking and jumping into the air. The ground shook when he landed. Crimson droplets splattered in every direction between the combatants as they roared and gouged one another, but Thorn's grace was unmistakable. He anticipated every attack, moving before Riaz could land a killing blow.

Thorn's attacks became more aggressive and more accurate. When it was obvious Riaz had chosen a fight he couldn't win, he shimmered, disappearing from view.

Draco threw up a protection bubble. The magic glanced over it before she realized it had come from Thorn.

Riaz reappeared, falling to the ground with his scythe in the air. Thorn raised his, swiping through the air until he impaled the black Dragon.

Riaz screamed before he fell hard to the ground. His body resumed that of a human, before he coughed blood from his mouth. Gurgling the life-giving liquid. "Curse you," he hissed.

Thorn resumed his human form. "You already did. Goodbye, my friend."

Death rattled in Riaz's chest as he took his last breath.

Draco handed Thorn a towel as he approached. He wiped the blood from his face before checking the wound on his stomach. It healed slowly. Tissue melded together far slower than it should. "You must conserve your magic. You're healing like a fledgling."

"I had to. Once he used invisibility, he broke the rules of combat. He's dead, it's over." His voice held an undertone of regret despite his words.

The low roar echoed in the wind. It wasn't close, but another fight was coming. "Is that another Dragon?" Ella asked, searching the sky.

Cole nodded. "Two more darks. Allorin is intent on retrieving the forger's disc."

"He needs Ella for that. Allorin is trying to abduct her. He will force her to retrieve it," Thorn said.

At the end of the tunnel, a light formed. They couldn't see what caused it, only that it grew brighter as it raced toward them.
